H.264 Gamma Issue

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

There has been a problem with exporting H.264 from QuickTime (QT) for a few years. The issue hasn’t been addressed directly by Apple, however a few work around do exist. While in the process of updating some older video footage to H.264 for web distribution I experimented with x.264, a faster and more versatile codec for QuickTime and Final Cut Pro Conversion.

You can download it at MacUpdate , I found it wasn’t that much faster, actually quite slower by some margin but it does prevent the gamma increase.

Some other solutions can be found at www.videocopilot.net and at the www.provideocoalition.com

Any questions give me a shout, thought it might be useful :)

Britain at Play

Friday, August 7th, 2009

As part of an on going project we are getting ready to interview a selection of local councillors in Haxey. Haxey is a northern English village famous for hosting a traditional gathering of sorts known as the Haxey Hood.

The Hood is a traditional Lincolnshire event that occurs on a cold afternoon in January. A large community gathering takes place, full of good cheer and happiness followed by a rugby football scrum (called the “sway”), which pushes a leather tube (called the “hood”) to 1 of 4 pubs, where it remains until the following year’s game.

Here are some of the photographs (from Hallaton and Haxey) that are going to be featured in the book; the slideshow will be online in the usual places very soon.

Independent Journalism at Battle Space

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I got sent a link to Battle Space online today, a site with two major aims.

1. To depict the horror of the two recent conflicts that have taken place in the Middle East by western countries.

2. To showcase and promote independent journalism.

The photography and the stories on the site are very powerful, it’s really worth having a look. Battlespace is produced by November Eleven, an International public charity dedicated to independent journalism. The exhibition was made possible by the support and co-operation of Aurora Select, Fastback Creative Books, and Print Space. We hardly see photo journalism of Battle Space calibre appearing in the UK media, it’s not just a shame but as a photographer damn frustrating when we get more of this…

I have been spending allot of my time trying to get some of the best footage from Voidcomp’s and my own video archive in preparation for the new web site. Here is an old showreel of work shot “back in the day”, some while at University other clips a bit more recent.
