Biog:
James Stier grew up in Barnsley, South Yorkshire and graduated from Leeds University, where amongst other things he studied art. News reports of the Gulf War, images from Bosnia and the fall of the Berlin Wall had a profound effect on him, these events were instrumental in his decision to become a photographer.
Not sure how to accomplish this, he went to college and university, working in his spare time in a camera shop to his own creative projects, and even moonlighting as a radio presenter until he focused on visual story telling due to his infatuation with the medium from such a young age.
In 2005 he began working for Apple Computer, part of his time was spent working in Europe alongside Apple developers and professional photographers including Steve Winter, Bill Frakes and Vincent Laforet. This experience solidified the skills required to begin a career on his own.
In 2008 Voidcomp was formed to show case his work. Voidcomp derives from voigt-kampff; put simply a measure of human biological responses such as respiration, blush flow, heart rate and eye movement in reaction to emotionally provocative questions.
Stier found himself walking across the Himalayas on his first major assignment, working with a video production crew, traversing over 4000km in harsh and unforgiving conditions. This inspired him to train and work with with the Royal Air Force in 2009 for further experience in physically and emotionally stressful environments.
He has received numerous awards and accolades for his work but never feels he has accomplished enough.
